Impossible? Nope. You've Come A Long Way Baby...
Do you ever have days where you get frustrated and start thinking thoughts like
Nothing is working! This is too hard. Maybe it’s just not possible for me to have X, Y or Z …
Oh, just me? If you know what I’m talking about, please read on.
Here’s what I’ve started doing. I look back on my life and on the seemingly twisted path that I’ve chosen.
I see that every choice I have made has lead me to where I am now. And I see that many things that seemed impossible actually became a reality.
For instance, way back in 1998…
I was a college graduate with thousands of dollars of debt, working at a coffee shop in Bellingham, Washington. I had no money and no idea what to do next. My degree was in exercise science, which wasn’t exactly opening up a ton of opportunities for me. I was talking with a friend one day at the cafe. He said I think you should get a job as a flight attendant. I was wearing my barista apron with a black skirt and hair up that day. (Maybe I looked the part to him. LOL. )
The idea of a small-town Montana girl being a flight attendant was SO out of my zone of possibility that I laughed. OK, yeah. I’ll get right on that! That week just to humor myself, I browsed through the job ads in the newspaper and found one for a flight attendant open house interview in Seattle the following week. (Yep. The newspaper. That’s how it was done back in the old days!)
Fast forward, three months later and I was on a plane heading to Frankfurt doing my final tests to graduate as a flight attendant.
Some of the things I had to do to get there were crazy and seemed impossible at the time. My tire blew out on the way to the interview. I scaled a fence and crossed a highway to get help because there were no cell phones. There were communication issues within the hiring department, so I waited a month without a word. When I finally called them, I found out that I needed passport in 3 days in order to make the next training! Then my car broke, so I begged a friend to take me to Seattle to hopefully get an expedited passport in one day.
Why am I telling you all this? Not to stress you out, I promise! My point is that I DID IT. At times I felt I was in over my head, but I wanted that job more than I had ever wanted anything so I pushed past the doubt and fear and uncomfortable-ness of it all.
Thinking of past experiences that are real and did become possible helps me get out of the weeds when that pesky limiting belief… this is not possible for me….rears its ugly head. These memories give me the confidence and trust in myself that I need to keep going and work towards my goals because I know what I have already accomplished.
So next time you hear a thought like this in your head, ask yourself is there any truth to this? Then look back on your life for things you once believed you couldn’t do and celebrate how far you’ve come.
